Card signed "Ida S McKinley" by her husband William McKinley
Card signed “Ida S McKinley”. 4.5 x 2.0 inch, n.p., n.d. Signed in dark black ink by President William McKinley. Mounting residue on verso, else fine condition. Together with a bookpage-photo of Ida McKinley. A very rare card that was signed for the First Lady by her famous proxy - President William McKinley himself. Mrs. McKinley (1847-1907) suffered from epilepsy, was totally dependent on her husband, and therefore had little public role as First Lady. Her autograph is one of the rarest among First Ladies. In my landmark 2006 study for “The Manuscript Society”, I demonstrated that President McKinley actually signed various items, including fully handwritten letters and cards for his wife Ida, this card is one of them. A copy of my article for the Manuscript Society is included.
