James Monroe (1758-1831)

Exceedingly rare check signed from Paris to John Rutledge

5. President of the United States. Check signed “Jas. Monroe”. Check, 8.0 x 4.0 inch, Paris 1796 March 27. To John Rutledge in Charleston South Carolina to pay 500 $ to one James Yard. In full: "At thirty days sight of this my second of exchange (first of same date and tenor unpaid) pay to the order of James Yard, Five Hundred Dollars, value in account, and pass the same as advised by Jas Monroe". Mailing folds, handling wear, else good condition. John Rutledge Jr. (1739-1800) was an American Founding Father, politician, and jurist who served as one of the original associate justices of the Supreme Court and the second chief justice of the United States. Additionally, he served as the first president of South Carolina and later as its first governor after the Declaration of Independence was signed. As the 1790s progressed, the French Revolutionary Wars came to dominate U.S. foreign policy, with the British and French both interdicting U.S. trade with Europe. Like most other Jeffersonians, Monroe supported the French Revolution, but Hamilton's followers tended to sympathize more with Britain. In 1794, hoping to find a way to avoid war with both countries, George Washington appointed Monroe as his minister (ambassador) to France, after Madison and Robert R. Livingston had declined the offer. Checks signed by James Monroe are extremely rare. Dating from his time in Paris, this particular check is likely unique. Furthermore, its connection to John Rutledge makes this check a truly exceptional piece of American history.

Wilson, Woodrow (1856-1924)

Historically important typed letter signed AS PRESIDENT “…to keep the country out of war…”

28. President of the United States. Typed letter signed AS PRESIDENT. 1p, 8.5 x 7.0 inch, Washington, 1917 February 15. Embossed “The White House Washington” stationery and with the known Whitigs woven linen watermark. Two month before the American entry into World War I., President Wilson writes to the first Federal Reserve Chairman Hamlin: “My dear Mr. Hamlin: I am warmly obliged to you for calling my attention to your correspondence with Mrs. J. Malcolm Forbes. I share with you the feeling that the work which societies such as the one she has been connected with have hitherto been doing can in the present circumstances, if continued, do nothing but harm by creating the impression that there are divided counsels amongst us. I am sure that Mrs. Forbes will believe me when I say that I am doing everything that I honorably can to keep the country out of war, and I think that the best way to support my efforts just now is to show that the whole country, at any rate the thoughtful element of it, is back of me. I would be very much obliged if you would convey some such counsel to Mrs. Forbes, whom I very much admire and who I am sure will be moved by the highest patriotic purposes. Cordially and sincerely yours, Woodrow Wilson”. The embossed “The White House Washington” a little faded, signature light, text is dark. Excellent and historically important typed letter signed. Re-elected in 1916 around the slogan "He kept us out of war", Wilson asked the Congress in April 1917 to declare war in order to make "the world safe for democracy.” Charles Sumner Hamlin (1861-1938) was the first chairman of the Federal Reserve. Kennedy, John F. (1917-1963)

Fantastic rare early signed photograph

35. President of the United States. Rare early signed and inscribed glossy photograph from his first year in Congress. 7.0 x 9.0 inch, n.p., n.d. (1948), signed and inscribed in fountain pen "With warmest regards to Kenneth Browne from John F. Kennedy”. Reverse bears an affixed collector's label indicating that it was signed in 1948. The said date is consistent with my Kennedy autograph study which shows some signatures from this time. In 1946 the 29-year-old John F. Kennedy ran for the vacant 11th Congressional District seat in eastern Massachusetts. To its predominantly working class constituents - located in and around Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, and Brighton - Kennedy seemed like a privileged dilettante: he was young, inexperienced, wealthy, and propped up by family and political connections. Yet Kennedy successfully cultivated another image, that of a World War II. veteran sympathetic to economic and social hardship. His campaign slogan “The New Generation Offers a Leader” emphasized his age positive rather than treating it as a liability. He won the general election by winning 73% of the vote, and went on to serve in the House of Representatives until 1953, when he secured a Senate seat. An exemplary, very early signed portrait of Kennedy as he began his career in politics and one of the finest you can hope to find. With light overall creasing, else fine condition.
